Transmission: Rebuild vs Replace
How do you know which you need?
When Your Transmission isn’t Working
Transmission issues can start small. You may notice a change when the gears shift. Maybe there’s an unexpected, weird smell or pool of liquid underneath when you’re parked. However, if you brush them off, your vehicle may also end up stopped on the side of the road.
Of course, if you experience any of the first signs, make an appointment to take your vehicle into your trusted automotive repair shop. An experienced team will diagnose the issue and present you with clear and understandable options to get you back on the road quickly and safely.
But what do those options mean?
Options: Rebuild or Replace?
There’s a chance, if you catch it early enough, that the issue can be resolved easily, requiring only a minor repair. Whether it’s determining the source of a computer code, sealing a minor leak of a pan gasket, or topping off your transmission fluid, these minor repairs are quick and relatively easy for your wallet.
However, if the leak in the system isn’t minor, or it isn’t 100% clear where the code is leading, this may mean the transmission must be removed from your vehicle’s body. This allows better access to both diagnosis and a way forward. The primary difference between replacement and rebuild is the severity of the damage.
Does your transmission slip gears? Or is there a longer lag when the gears shift? These issues can often be resolved with a new part during a replacement. Your technician will change out the damaged part that complies with a manufacturer’s recommendations and/or the warranty. They will also properly reseal all the seals in the area and attached systems.
However, if the damage is more severe, the technician may need to disassemble the entire transmission. Once they have made the necessary replacements and reassembled the transmission, it will be reinstalled to get you back on the road. While rebuilding a transmission is more expensive and time-consuming than replacing or repairing, it is less expensive than getting a new vehicle.
